Why the movement matters
The dial, bezel and bracelet are what people see, but the movement is what you live with every day. It decides how accurate your watch is, how smooth the seconds hand sweeps, how long it runs off the wrist and how easy it is to service in the future.
Choosing the right movement is less about finding the “best” one and more about finding the right one for you.
Automatic movements explained
Every watch in our collection uses an automatic movement. A weighted rotor spins as you move your wrist, winding the mainspring for you. Wear it daily and it keeps running. Leave it on a table for a couple of days and it will stop, ready to be set and worn again.
If you rotate between several watches, a watch winder is a simple way to keep an automatic running between wears.
What “free sprung” means
In many movements, timing is adjusted with a small lever called a regulator, which changes the working length of the balance spring. It works, but it can be knocked slightly out of position over time.
A free sprung balance has no regulator. Instead, timing is adjusted using small weights on the balance wheel itself. The result is a more stable setup that tends to hold its timing better, especially after knocks and everyday wear. That is why our Tier 1 movements are free sprung.
Our movement tiers
Tier 1, Free Sprung Dandong. Our premium choice. A free sprung balance and refined construction make these the best option if you want the most stable, consistent performance.
Tier 2, Regular Dandong, Shanghai and Swiss ETA. Reliable, proven and widely used. These movements offer dependable everyday performance and are a great choice if you want quality at a more accessible price.
How to choose
Ask yourself three simple questions:
- How often will you wear it? For a daily watch, a Tier 1 free sprung movement is worth the upgrade.
- What is your budget? Tier 2 movements give excellent value without compromising on reliability.
- Do you care about servicing? Widely used movements are easier for watchmakers to work on, which keeps future servicing simple.
