GMT Variants Explained, Pepsi, Batman, Sprite and More

What is a GMT watch?

A GMT watch shows two time zones at once. Alongside the normal hour, minute and seconds hands, it has an extra hand that makes one full turn every 24 hours. Paired with a 24-hour bezel, it lets you track home time and local time at a glance.

It was originally designed for pilots crossing time zones. Today it is one of the most popular watch styles in the world, and much of that comes down to its colourful two-tone bezels.

Why the bezels have two colours

The two colours on a GMT bezel split it into day and night. The lighter colour usually marks the daytime hours and the darker colour marks the night. It is practical, but it also gave collectors the perfect excuse to give each colourway a nickname.

The popular nicknames

Pepsi, blue and red. The original and most iconic GMT colourway. Bright, bold and instantly recognisable.

Batman, blue and black. A darker, more modern combination. Sporty but easy to wear every day, which makes it one of the most popular choices.

Sprite, green and black. A newer favourite, often paired with a left-hand crown. Distinctive and a little unexpected.

Root Beer, brown and black. Usually paired with gold-tone accents. Warm, rich and slightly vintage in feel.

Coke, red and black. A classic combination with a sportier, more aggressive look.

Starbucks, green bezel. Often used for a green and black or all-green colourway. A rich alternative to the usual blues.

Which one should you choose?

  • Want a classic that never dates? Go Pepsi.
  • Want something you can wear with everything? Go Batman.
  • Want to stand out? Go Sprite or Starbucks.
  • Want warmth and vintage character? Go Root Beer.
